Ponta da Piedade Hike (Part of the Fishermen’s Trail)

The Ponta da Piedade hike stands as one of the Algarve’s most breathtaking coastal walks, offering an unforgettable 10 kilometer journey through some of the Algarve’s or maybe even Portugal’s iconic landscapes. This spectacular trail near Lagos forms part of the renowned Fisherman’s Trail, delivering dramatic clifftop views, golden limestone formations, and pristine beaches.

The Route and Experience
The most rewarding approach starts from Praia da Luz, climbing to the dramatic Rocha Negra plateau, a somewhat challenging ascent rewarded with phenomenal panoramic views of the coastline (when you are facing the mountain, if you go left there is an easier zigzag winding path that will take you up, but of course you can just go straight forward to the more challenging way). The trail continues eastwards along clifftops, with the Atlantic Ocean as your constant companion, its a easy trail to follow up to Porto de Mós Beach, there you can have an ice cream and turn back, or go straight to Ponta da Piedade and then follow the coast up to Lagos.

Ponta da Piedade itself features magnificent golden-yellow rock formations sculpted by Atlantic waves into stunning arches and towering sea pillars. The limestone cliffs provide striking contrast against deep azure waters. A dramatic staircase of 202 stone steps descends to a magical grotto at water level, offering the most spectacular cliff formations on the headland’s eastern side.

The route passes several stunning beaches, including Praia do Camilo and Praia do Porto de Mós, accessible via steep clifftop paths. These secluded coves with crystal-clear waters and golden sands provide perfect rest stops away from busier tourist areas.
