There is something about the Algarve in late August. The heat has been building for weeks, the ocean is at its warmest, and the whole coastline seems to hum with the feeling that summer is holding on for one last great celebration. On August 29, 2026, Praia da Luz will do exactly that with the return of the Banho do 29, one of … if i should say myself ;) Portugal’s most cherished coastal traditions.
The belief behind it is wonderfully specific. According to local folklore, a swim in the sea on the night of August 29 counts as twenty-nine ordinary baths and keeps evil spirits at bay. Nobody can say with certainty where the custom began. It likely grew out of ancient end-of-summer rites, shaped over the centuries by the region’s Moorish heritage and a deep-rooted relationship with the Atlantic. Generations ago, families from the interior would load up donkeys and carts, pack their provisions, and make the journey to the coast just to take that midnight plunge. The carts are gone now, but the heart of the tradition has not changed. People still gather by the water, still swim at midnight, and still treat it as a night worth sharing.
In 2026, Praia da Luz and Lagos will once again hold parallel celebrations, each with its own atmosphere but united by the same custom. Praia da Luz leans into the party side of things, with two stages running late into the night and a lineup that covers everything from samba to rock tributes to electronic sets.
The Palco Fortaleza opens at 18h00 and runs until 02h00, featuring DJ Dadibo stepping in for DJ Fire, Samba Zona Sul, GM Tributo aos Xutos, and Humberto Silva & Banda.
The Palco Rocha Negra kicks off at 20h00 and keeps going until 03h00, with DJ Aisha, 5Ex Band, DJ Ari Girão, and DJ Diego Miranda. Food and drink stalls line the seafront, so you can grab something between sets and settle in for a long, easy evening by the water.
The moment everyone is waiting for arrives at midnight. Fireworks go up over the Atlantic, and the crowd heads into the sea. There is no rush, no competition, no choreography. It is just people walking into the waves together, laughing with friends and strangers, honoring a custom that has outlived empires (well at least the portuguese one hehehe). Whether you believe in the supernatural properties or just want to swim under the stars, it is hard not to feel that you are part of something larger than yourself.
Also getting to Praia da Luz is straightforward, and the organizers have made it even easier. The A ONDA urban bus network runs free on all lines from 18h00 onward. Between midnight and 02h00, a municipal shuttle covers the Lagos to Luz circuit, departing from Escola Tecnopolis and stopping at Rua Direita in Praia da Luz. The last bus leaves Praia da Luz at 02h00 sharp, so plan accordingly. If you are driving, keep in mind that Rua do Poço, Rua da Várzea, and the Luz Bay Club area will be closed to traffic from 18h00 to 03h00. In Lagos, Avenida dos Descobrimentos shuts down between the BP station and the volunteer fire station from 20h00 to 01h30.
The Praia da Luz celebration is organized by the Clube Recreativo, Cultural e Desportivo Luzense, with support from the Lagos City Council and the Junta de Freguesia da Luz. Admission is free for everyone. The event welcomes families, night owls, tradition enthusiasts, and anyone who simply wants to experience a slice of authentic Portuguese coastal culture.
Meanwhile, Lagos runs its own celebration with a more traditional and community-focused feel. The day begins at 11h00 with a historical recreation on Avenida dos Descobrimentos and Praia da Batata, led by the Centro de Estudos de Lagos, bringing the origins of the Banho 29 tradition to life. From there, the program moves between Cais da Solaria and Jardim da Constituição, mixing music, dance, and the popular swimwear contests that celebrate both heritage and creativity.
